Frequently Asked Questions
who can play upward basketball?
Boys and girls in Kindergarten through 5th grade are welcome to sign up to play basketball in our league.
what does it cost to play Upward basketball?
At Noel, it costs $90 to play. This fee includes a jersey, a T-shirt, 8 weeks of league play, an end-of-year party, and an end-of-year gift. Limited partial scholarships are available.
What if I have never played basketball before?
Noel's Upward basketball league is for both experienced and inexperienced children - including those who have never even touched a basketball before! Emphasis is placed on learning new skills and living out Christian principles. All players, no matter their skill level, play at least half of each game.
Why do I have to be evaluated?
Attending one Evaluation Night is required for all new AND returning players. At the evaluation, players will complete 6 simple drills. Based on the results of the drills, the child's height, and the number of years of basketball experience, the player will be placed on a team. This is so that the teams are evenly matched, with no one team dominating the other teams. The drills are simple and do not require any prior knowledge of basketball.
when are evaluation nights?
Evaluations are Monday, October 24 and Tuesday, October 25 from 6:00 - 8:00. All participants, new and returning, must attend ONE Evaluation Night. You can arrive anytime during the 2-hour window. In fact, coming between 7:00 and 8:00 will assure a smaller line and a quicker evaluation. Registrations forms will be available at both Evaluation Nights, if you have not signed up in advance.
Who is my coach?
Once you have signed up, you will be contacted by your coach or another league official prior to the first practice. If you are interested in coaching, please indicate that on your child's registration form, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Who is on my team?
There are three divisions in Noel's league: K & 1st grade, 2nd & 3rd grades, and 4th & 5th grades. Teams will be created based on the registrations that we receive and the evaluations outlined above. Participants may request one other participant to be on the same team. (Use the Carpool feature at sign up.)
What color is the uniform?
For the 2017 season, we do not know the jersey colors yet. They are reversible, so one week your child will wear the dark side and one week, the light side. Come to the game with the jersey turned either way, and the coaches will make sure everyone's jersey is turned to the correct side. We did not order shorts, so any color is acceptable. Please wear the Upward T-shirt under your jersey.
What time is my game?
The game schedule will be determined based on the registrations received. We make every attempt to have each age division play at the same time each Saturday. The schedule will be published well in advance of the first game. Please be at the gym at least 15 minutes prior to the start of your game time. Player introductions will occur promptly on the hour (or as close as we can get).
when do we practice?
The practice schedule will be determined by the coaches' availability and gym availability. Typically, practices can be Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday evenings. Each team is allowed to practice just one hour each week!
Where are practices and games?
All practices and games will take place in Noel's gym. See the next question for more information about the exact location.
Where is Noel and where should I park?
Noel's address is 520 Herndon Street. Go to www.noelumc.org and click on the About Us tab to see a map. Noel's gym entrance is on Highland Avenue, halfway between Herndon Street and Jordan Street. You can park along Herndon Street or on Highland Avenue. The most convenient parking lot is at the corner of Herndon and Highland on the southeast corner. From there, it is a quick 1/2 block walk to the gym.
Do we need anything else for games or practices?
Jerseys and T-shirts for game day are provided. You will need to provide shorts and court shoes for games. Any color is acceptable. Shorts and T-shirts and tennis shoes are all that are needed for practices. Players may bring plastic water bottles to practices and games, although there is a water fountain available.
Are refreshments available at games?
Yes! A concession stand will be open on Saturday mornings!
Is there an end-of-year party?
There is! In 2017, it will be in Noel's Worship Center on Tuesday, February 28.
What other children's programming is available at Noel?
There are lots of family events and opportunities for children at Noel, including Vacation Bible School, Parents Night Out, Mission Possible Kids, Palm Sunday Palm Parade and Egg Hunt, and A Night in Bethlehem Christmas Pageant. We have Sunday School each week at 9:15 and worship at 8:30 and 10:30. There are two services that run concurrently at 10:30 - one contemporary; the other, traditional. For more information about children's programming at Noel, click here. If you do not have a church home, we would love to visit with you about what Noel has to offer.
